Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum — campaign

Plant & Animal Cells

Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum

A refined lipid atelier.

A tubular membrane studio devoted to lipids, steroids and detoxification — no ribosomes in sight.

A note

The campaign imagery is a fictional luxury concept. Toggle to Scientific X-Ray for the labelled biological illustration.

Structure

An interconnected network of membrane-bound tubules that lack attached ribosomes and are continuous with the rest of the ER.

Function

Synthesises lipids, including phospholipids and steroids. In particular cell types, such as liver cells, its enzymes help detoxify certain drugs and toxins. Specialised smooth ER in muscle (the sarcoplasmic reticulum) stores and releases Ca²⁺ ions for muscle contraction.

Where Found

Eukaryotic cells, including plant and animal cells; its abundance varies with cell function.

Why It Matters

Supplies lipids needed for membrane formation and certain hormones. Helps metabolise potentially harmful substances and regulates intracellular calcium levels.

Structure → Function

Its large membranes hold enzymes for lipid synthesis and detoxification. Calcium pumps move calcium into its enclosed lumen to store and release it.
